On world habitat day Amnesty International members across the world and a number of partner organizations in Africa campaign to stop forced evictions in Africa. Simeon Mawanza, Amnesty International Africa Researcher narrates this short web film shows the shocking story of families whose homes were destroyed following decisions by governments in various countries in Africa. Officials often remove them against their will using excessive force and provide no compensation for the loss of their homes and possessions.

Iraqi Refugees: The View From Syria

1 in 5 Iraqis have been uprooted by violence in their homeland. Many have fled to Syria, and their situation is growing increasingly desperate. Addressing the needs of displaced Iraqis will help to ensure a stable Iraq. The U.S. must start by directly engaging with Syria and appointing an ambassador.

Refugees International advocates for lifesaving assistance and protection for displaced people and promotes solutions to displacement crises. Refugee crises left unattended threaten stability around the world. There are 41.9 million refugees and internally displaced people and 12 million stateless people living in limbo without citizenship rights. People forced from their homes by conflict are among the world’s most vulnerable and they all have individual stories of loss, heartache and survival.

South Sudan: An Enduring Struggle

Directed and filmed by Refugees International (RI) Board Member Matt Dillon while on an RI assessment mission to south Sudan in February 2009, this short documentary shows the current struggles of returning south Sudanese refugees and the communities that are hosting them.

Approximately 2 million south Sudanese refugees have returned home following the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement between north and south Sudan that ended a 21-year civil war. However, tensions between the north and south are on the rise again, laregely because of extreme poverty and lack of access to water, sanitation, education, health care and jobs.

Refugees International advocates for lifesaving assistance and protection for displaced people and promotes solutions to displacement crises. In south Sudan, the U.S. and the international community must support the implementation of the peace agreement and increase funding for basic social services and income opportunities.

Climate change is changing our world. Within the lifetimes of children being born today, it may challenge our survival as a species.

The Earth is hotter than it has been for at least one thousand years. By the end of this century, if current trends continue, the temperature will likely climb higher than it's been at any time in the past two million years. The consequences of this drastic rise, caused by burning fossil fuels, are likely to be catastrophic: mass extinctions, droughts and hundreds of millions of refugees.
