Women in the rural highlands of Nicaragua are 30 times more likely to die from childbirth than women in the United States. CARE will focus on girls (between 5 and 17 years old) who work in exploitative and the worst forms of child labor. The goal of the project is 4,000 girls (between 5 and 17 years old) withdrawn or prevented from exploitive labor and enrolled in educational programs. These girls often dropout early, never to finish their education due to the necessity to work and because they lack the financial resources required for school such as uniforms, books, writing utensils, transport, nutritious meals, and other essentials.

CARE will mobilize existing resources in and outside the educational system to improve access to both informal education options and to social and health services-to address the risks and vulnerabilities such as early pregnancies, adolescent mothers, and their children. CARE will strive to maximize the number of girls completing their educations and breaking the cyclical nature of poverty.
